Softr is a genuinely good tool for a specific window: internal tools, member portals, and simple client-facing apps built on Airtable or Google Sheets data. The window closes when you need custom logic, row-level security the tool doesn't expose, payment flows, or more than a handful of custom UI patterns.
When Softr is still the right answer
- Internal tooling for a team under 50 people where the Airtable base is the source of truth.
- Member portals where the access control logic is simple (logged in / not logged in).
- Early-stage products where the data model is still changing weekly.
When it's time to migrate
- You need row-level access control beyond what Softr's visibility rules can express.
- You need a payment flow with a real backend (Stripe webhooks, fulfillment logic).
- Your Airtable base is hitting row limits or API rate limits.
- You need custom pages or components Softr's block library doesn't have.
- An investor or auditor is asking about your tech stack.
What to do with the Airtable base
You have two options. First: keep Airtable as the source of truth and replace only the frontend. This is faster but adds an ongoing API dependency and rate-limit ceiling. Second: migrate the data to Postgres and use Airtable for ops/admin only. This is more work upfront and more scalable long-term.
For most production apps, we recommend option 2. We use an idempotent sync script that runs daily during the migration window, then cuts over cleanly.
The migration path
- 1Inventory every Softr block, page, and visibility rule — this becomes the requirements document.
- 2Export Airtable base to CSV and generate a Prisma schema from the field types.
- 3Build the Next.js app with the same pages and navigation as the Softr app — UI parity first.
- 4Implement row-level security in Postgres using Prisma middleware or Next.js route guards.
- 5Run the new app in parallel with the Softr app. Migrate users in waves.
- 6Zero-downtime cutover: DNS flip, freeze writes to Airtable, done.
Softr migrations typically take 3–6 weeks depending on how many custom integrations the Airtable base has. Free architecture audit available — no commitment.
