WordPressNext.js (App Router)

Keep the content. Drop the patch-Tuesday anxiety.

Every post, page, media item, and URL moves across intact. Your editors keep a familiar CMS. You stop maintaining a plugin stack that only exists to fight WordPress.

Why this stack

What you get when you move WordPress to Next.js (App Router).

Every URL preserved

Permalinks map one-to-one, and anything that has to change gets a 301. Rankings carry over because Google sees the same addresses returning better pages.

Editors keep a CMS

Content lands in Sanity, Payload, or Contentful with your existing field structure. Non-technical editors keep publishing; nobody learns Git to change a headline.

Plugins become code

Forms, SEO fields, redirects, and caching stop being twelve plugins with twelve update cycles and become a few hundred lines you own and can audit.

Core Web Vitals in the green

Static generation plus edge caching typically moves a plugin-heavy WordPress site from the 40s into the 90s on mobile. That is a ranking input, not just a vanity score.

The attack surface collapses

No PHP execution, no plugin CVEs, no admin login to brute-force. The published site is static assets and typed API routes.

The migration map

WordPress concept → Next.js (App Router) equivalent

The exact mental model we use during migration. If you're scoping internally, copy this table.

Post / Page
CMS document + Next.js route
Post types become document schemas; templates become React components.
Custom Post Type
CMS document type
ACF field groups map cleanly to typed CMS fields.
Advanced Custom Fields
Typed CMS schema
Every field gains a real type, so editors get validation instead of a text box.
Yoast / Rank Math
Next.js Metadata API
Meta, OG, canonical, and sitemaps generated from the route tree, not a plugin.
Contact Form 7 / Gravity
Server Action + your CRM
Submissions post straight into your CRM with spam protection and no plugin database.
WP Rocket / caching plugin
Static generation + edge cache
Caching stops being a plugin you tune and becomes how the site is built.
WooCommerce
Stripe / Shopify headless
Scoped separately — commerce migrations are their own engagement.
Media library
CMS assets + next/image
Images gain responsive variants and modern formats automatically.
The 6-step process

Predictable. Auditable. Reversible.

1

Content inventory

We crawl the site and export via WP REST or WP-CLI: every post type, taxonomy, custom field, media item, and URL. You get a content map before anything is built.

2

Schema design

Post types and ACF groups become typed CMS schemas. Editors review the field structure before migration so nothing surprising appears later.

3

Content migration

Automated transfer with validation on counts and field completeness. Media re-uploaded and re-referenced. Internal links rewritten.

4

Template rebuild

Theme templates become React components, pixel-faithful by default. Visual diffs on every pull request catch regressions.

5

Redirect map

Every legacy URL is either preserved exactly or given a 301. Nothing 404s at cutover, which is where most WordPress migrations lose their rankings.

6

Cutover

DNS flip with the WordPress install kept live and readable for a rollback window. Search Console is warmed with the new sitemap the same day.

Frequently asked

WordPressNext.js (App Router) questions

Will we lose our search rankings?+

Not if the redirect map is done properly, which is why it is its own step. URLs are preserved wherever possible and 301'd where not. Sites usually gain positions afterwards because Core Web Vitals improve sharply.

Can our editors still publish without a developer?+

Yes. Content lives in a headless CMS with your existing field structure. The publishing workflow is familiar; what disappears is the plugin admin, not the editor.

What happens to WooCommerce?+

Commerce is scoped as a separate engagement because the data and payment surface is much larger. We either keep WooCommerce headless during transition or migrate to Stripe or Shopify depending on your catalogue.

How long does a WordPress migration take?+

A content site with under 500 pages typically lands in 3 to 5 weeks. Sites with heavy custom functionality, membership, or commerce run 6 to 12.
